A set of six commemorative $50 and $10 notes with designs depicting significant milestones and achievements in Singapore's history was launched yesterday.

The set, issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to mark Singapore's 50th birthday, comprises one $50 note and five $10 polymer notes, and will be available at banks from tomorrow.

This Golden Jubilee year is "a time to reflect on our shared history and sacrifices of our pioneers, to reflect on the values that brought us here and to pledge to preserve and uphold these values", said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the launch of the set of notes at the MAS building in Shenton Way.

The gold $50 note has a transparent panel showing the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first Prime Minister, with a raised fist, leading the crowd with a rallying cry of "Merdeka!", which means independence in Malay.

The event marked the achievement of self-government by Singapore in 1959, and was a major milestone to independence in 1965.

The back of the note features the first National Day Parade on Aug 9, 1966, and the latest new town of Punggol.

The note's gold colour reflects the country's Golden Jubilee, MAS said.

The five $10 notes have a common front design and varying back designs reflecting values and aspirations such as multiracialism, meritocracy, peace and stability, strong families and active citizenry.

Like the current series of notes, all the SG50 bills feature a portrait of Singapore's first President Yusof Ishak on the front. But the new notes have security features that are the first of their kind to be used on a currency note, said MAS.

For example, the $50 note has a security stripe featuring the numbers "1965" that switch to "2015" when held at a different angle.

The notes were designed by four local artists and designers - Mr Chua Mia Tee, Mr Eng Siak Loy, Mr Weng Ziyan and Mr Fabian Lim.

The public can get the commemorative notes at the branches of nine major retail banks from tomorrow by exchanging the mat face value.

These banks include DBS Bank/POSB - which will be extending the opening hours of its branches till 8pm on weekdays for the next two weeks - and OCBC Bank, which has employed additional manpower to manage the crowds expected.

Customers of UOB can reserve the notes online and collect the mat a later date.

Each individual will be limited to a quota of five sets of notes. Singaporeans will be given priority to exchange the notes from tomorrow to the end of next month.

They will have to present their identification card at the bank as proof of citizenship. The notes will be available to non-Singaporeans from Oct 1.

Dr Andrew Khoo, deputy managing director of corporate development at MAS, said: "There will be enough SG50 notes available for exchange. There is no need to rush."

A total of 20 million pieces of $50 notes and 75 million pieces of $10 notes - 15 million pieces of each design-will be printed, he said.

The notes complete the set of currencies issued by MAS to mark SG50, which include a set of three commemorative coins that were launched in April.

Residents of Potong Pasir can enjoy a new and improved waterfront near their homes, with viewing decks and a plaza for community events.

The 400m stretch along the Kallang River was officially opened yesterday by Potong Pasir MP Sitoh Yih Pin.

Rain gardens and vegetated swales will cleanse rainwater run-off, and decks with timber seating offer a soothing view of the waterfront.

An open plaza has also been built to accommodate 750 people for community events and outdoor classroom learning.

Said Irene Ong, 62, who has lived in the estate for more than 20 years: "The water is very clean and the scenery, with different types of plants and flowers, really makes people want to come down to have a look."

Last month, students from St Andrew's Secondary School helped to plant rain gardens along the waterway.

Rain gardens treat rainwater run-off using specially selected plants, for instance, before it is discharged into the river.

The school has conducted cleanups and projects along the Kallang River since 2005.

The Potong Pasir waterfront has been 11/2 years in the making, under national water agency PUB's Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme to spruce up water bodies here.

The $7-million project is the 28th under the programme to be completed. Over 100 potential locations have been identified for a makeover under the ABC Waters programme by 2030.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines, Mr Sitoh cited other work that has benefited residents, including lift upgrading and a home improvement programme.

Potong Pasir was held by opposition MP Chiam See Tong for 27 years, but it elected the People's Action Party candidate in 2011.

"There are still a lot of things to be done," said Mr Sitoh. "We want to carry on and complete the journey that we have started."

Singapore Botanic Gardens was made a Unesco World Heritage Site last week, becoming just one of three gardens in the world, and the only one in Asia, to earn that honour. The Straits Times speaks to the passionate men and women helming plant research there.

Displayed in the Botanic Gardens' herbarium is a sprig of jasmine that has been preserved for more than 200 years.

Collected by missionaries in India in the year 1790, the plant was brought to Singapore and donated to the Gardens around 1879. While the dried specimen might not be much to look at, it is one reason Singapore has been feted as a leading centre of tropical plant research.

After the Gardens was founded in 1859, its herbarium was set up in 1875 to collect, document and preserve plants in the region.

It has amassed a vast collection of about 750,000 dried plant specimens and 15,000 plant samples preserved in alcohol, making it a crucial stop for botanists seeking to understand South-east Asia's flora.

Dr David Middleton, 51, the herbarium's keeper, said of its roots: "When it was founded, it was the main herbarium for Malaya."

He added: "Even after Singapore's independence from Malaysia in 1965, all of the collections remained here in Singapore."

In the past two years, seven new plants have been found in Singapore and named in scientific papers.

These discoveries came after researchers compared their finds in the field to specimens in the herbarium's archives.

Its specimens are as diverse as they are extensive: Aside from the 225-year-old jasmine sprig, one section contains a century's collection of gingers from Penang, Perak and Pahang dating from the 1890s to the 1990s.

There are also specimens from the Cratoxylum glaucum Korth, a small tree first found in Bangka, an island east of Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1802, and from the Nepenthes klossii, a tropical pitcher plant first found in Papua, Indonesia, in 1912.

Some of the herbarium's plants once grew in Singapore but are now extinct here, such as the Thrixspermum psiloglottis (Ridl.) Schltr, an orchid with pale yellow flowers first found in Malaysia.

Every two weeks, a small team from the herbarium ventures into Singapore's green spaces, such as the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, to collect new specimens and learn more about the plants.

The researchers also survey sites in other parts of the South-east Asian region such as Brunei, Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia.

Dr Middleton, who is also the Gardens' deputy director and is in charge of research and conservation, said

the field trips allow experienced staff to mentor their junior colleagues, so that skills are passed from one

generation of botanists to the next. "There are more than 2,000 native species in Singapore, and the easiest way to identify them is when they are in flower or fruit, but that doesn't happen most of the time," he said.

"It's a great skill to be able to identify a plant, and the longer you do it, the better you get."

The regular surveys also enable the researchers to monitor changes in the landscape, sound the alarm about disappearing plants and inform conservation decisions - work that has become easier due to modern technology.

Ms Bazilah Ibrahim, 27, who helps manage the herbarium's collection, explained: "Some of the early collectors wrote very vague labels for their specimens, partly because they didn't have the equipment that we have now.
"The label might say Changi Road, for example, but we wouldn't know exactly where in Changi Road the specimen was collected.

"Now, we have GPS (global positioning system) and can pinpoint the co-ordinates."

Other labels have become obsolete, she added. "We've come across labels that say Chan Chu Kang. You can't find that on a map now, and you might assume that it was misspelt and actually means Choa Chu Kang. But there used to be a Chan Chu Kang. It just doesn't exist any more."

http://news.asiaone.com/news/science-and-tech/vanda-miss-joaquim-mystery-solved

Singapore may have named the Vanda Miss Joaquim its national flower in 1981, but it was not until three decades later that a mystery about its origins was solved.

The orchid had been brought to the Botanic Gardens' first director Henry Ridley in early 1893 by either Miss Agnes Joaquim, an Armenian horticulturalist born in Singapore, or her younger brother Joe.

After examining the orchid, Mr Ridley noted that two other orchids, the Vanda hookeriana and Vanda teres, had been used to create it. But orchids have both male and female parts, so they can be either mother or father to a hybrid.

In the case of the Vanda Miss Joaquim, which Mr Ridley named after Agnes, he wrote: "Unfortunately, no record was kept as to which was used as the male."

The orchid's parentage stayed unclear for more than 100 years, until Dr Gillian Khew joined the Gardens in 2009 and established a new molecular biology laboratory.

The 37-year-old senior researcher worked with others to determine what roles Vanda Miss Joaquim's parents had played.

In a scientific paper published in 2011 outlining her findings, she wrote: "The precise identification of an orchid hybrid's parentage is of utmost importance to botanists, breeders and enthusiasts alike."

Dr Khew told The Straits Times that she sequenced the DNA of specific genes in the orchid that are contributed by only its mother.

Initial tests were done with fresh specimens of Vanda Miss Joaquim. To confirm results, Dr Khew tested a bit of tissue from the original 1893 specimen that been preserved in the Gardens' herbarium.

"Vanda teres was the mother. By elimination, Vanda hookeriana was the father," she said.

While solving the mystery was exciting, Dr Khew said the project is just one of many she has worked on.

Another was to determine where a Brazilian cactus, identified as a new species by the Gardens' current director, Dr Nigel Taylor, fit in the cactus family tree.

"My role is to use DNA sequence information to help classify plants, which helps guide conservation decisions," she said.

The laboratory has a tissue culture section that also plays a major role in conservation, by cloning rare plants and germinating seeds, including orchids. She said: "We mass-produce the plants, sometimes in the thousands, and these are re-introduced to Singapore's streetscapes and parks."

With hard, plastic seats in its open-air visitor arrival area, a single drinking fountain, a two-counter immigration check-in area and no food or beverage options in sight, Seletar Airport looks like an airport from another country - a smaller, less developed one.

Miles away from the busy metropolitan hub that is Changi Airport, it retains a rustic vibe that speaks of simpler, more modest times.

About 20 years ago, it cost less than 10 cents an hour to park a small plane at this airport. Animals from the leafy surrounds roamed the unfenced runway, and planes waited for them to cross before taking off.

No wonder the airport's old- timers are lamenting that a slice of Singapore history and an important part of its aviation heritage will be gone when it was reported that the single-storey passenger terminal at the airport will be torn down soon.

A new two-storey facility with better amenities will take its place in the middle of 2017.

Officially opened in 1930, Seletar Airport handles mainly private and pilot training flights.

The upgrade - slated to begin this year - will see the new Seletar Airport equipped to handle its steadily growing traffic, and relieving some of the load on Changi's runways.

In the first nine months of last year, Seletar Airport handled about 18,000 passengers. It had about 22,000 for the whole of 2013.

In the airport's history, aviation pioneers and modern-day celebrities alike have graced its tarmac. In 2001, actors Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz cruised into the airport on a private jet to publicise their movie Vanilla Sky.

Others say they have spotted Microsoft founder Bill Gates and singer Bruno Mars. In March this year, former Indonesian president Megawati Sukarnoputri flew here to pay her last respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

In 1930, Ms Amy Johnson - the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia - made a stopover at Seletar.

Checkpoint inspector Kadis Jumanain, 53, a clearance supervisor at Seletar Airport with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, says: "Working here, you get to see people, planes and incidents that you don't get to see often."

In his 1 1/2 years working at the airport, he has seen people with critical injuries and gunshot wounds being flown in on air ambulances, and dead bodies being flown out.

And then there were the animals.

Mr Gary Ho, 40, was a trainee air traffic controller there between 1999 and 2001. He recalls the entire airport being an unfenced open space in the past.

Chickens, dogs and even the occasional python would cross the runway just as a plane was about to take off.

"We would just have to wait, but if it was a particularly stubborn snake, we'd call the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore to help get rid of it," he says.

Mr Jeyapala Machap, 48, deputy chief of Seletar Tower, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, recalls an incident in the 1990s when there was a cow on the loose.

It had wandered in from one of the neighbouring farms surrounding the airport and had run across the runway.

"It was caught, but it eventually died from stress. No one came looking for it though," he says.

For plane spotters and aviation geeks, Seletar Airport was probably the best place to see rare models such as vintage military planes and turboprops, which are planes with propellers in front.

Mr Lim Poh Ghee, 55, who did an apprenticeship with the then Singapore Aerospace Maintenance Company between 1977 and 1980, used to refurbish planes such as early models of the C-130, Hunter and Skyhawk. He is now a senior lecturer in Aeronautical & Aerospace Technology at Nanyang Polytechnic's School of Engineering.

Some of these planes had been acquired by the company after the Vietnam War and were ridden with bullet holes and even bullets in some cases.

Mr Jeyapala was thrilled to see a Vickers Vimy aircraft land at the airport some time in the 1990s. After all, the aircraft had first featured in World War I as a British heavy bomber plane.

"It had two sets of wings and propellers made of wood. It was a pure pleasure for me to see it fly," he recalls.

Many of the old airport staff paint a picture of a close-knit community. From ground handlers and emergency crew to pilots, immigration officers and air traffic controllers, most of them knew one another by name.

There also used to be friendly football matches and flying competitions between the flying clubs located in the area. The clubs competed to see whose aircraft could land the closest to a marker on the runway, says Mr Jeyapala.

In fact, the larger Seletar Aerospace Park, which Seletar Airport is part of, was its own small town in the 1980s.

Mr Mohandas Ramanathan, 52, who served his national service at Seletar Camp in 1983 and was later an instructor at the Singapore Flying College between 1999 and 2002, has many fond memories of the airport.

He says there used to be a canteen, a fuel station with two pumps and a tailor shop next door that repaired military uniforms.

"There were also these 'pirate taxis' that would take you into the grounds from the gate for just $1," says the programme chair for the diploma in Aviation Management at Republic Polytechnic.

Backtrack a few more decades and the compound even had a school, cinemas, a bank and a swimming pool within its grounds.

The year 2000 was the turning point, as taller buildings and larger hangars were built as the area developed.

The homelier aspects of Seletar Aerospace Park disappeared, such as its humble petrol kiosk, tailor shop and pirate taxis, as the authorities cracked down on the illegal service.

While many can understand the need for a bigger and better Seletar Airport, there are those who say they will miss the vintage charm of the place.

Mr Jeyapala says driving through the old gate that led one into the current Seletar Aerospace Park was like driving into the countryside, where goose-necked street lamps lined the single-lane road.

Although his Seletar Airport days are behind him, Mr Ho, who is a senior lecturer in Aviation Management & Services at Temasek Polytechnic, says he is very sad that the airport faces the wrecking ball.

He takes his students there so they can see a different side of Singapore's aviation heritage.

"They are always very shocked, because many of them think every airport is like Changi. Alas, a part of history is going. All good things come to an end," he says.

Airport milestones

1923: The Straits Settlements government gives the British government a 243ha site for a Royal Air Force station in Seletar. The site consists of 202.5ha of land planted with coconut and rubber trees and 40.5ha of mangrove swamp.

1928: The first planes to land at Seletar on Feb 28 are four Supermarine Southampton seaplanes, or "flying boats". These planes had flown for 4 1/2 months across about 14,500 km from Plymouth and were on a journey known as the Far East Flight.

1930: Singapore's first airport officially opens as a British Royal Air Force base on Jan 1, 1930.

On Feb 10, Seletar Air Base receives its first commercial flight - a Dutch East Indies Airways plane carrying eight passengers from Jakarta. This makes it both a civilian airport and military airbase.

1941: The Japanese bomb the Seletar airfield at 4am on Jan 8. This is the first British air base they strike.

The Japanese military takes control of the air base, and returns it to the British in 1945.

1968: The British begin to hand over operations of the air base to the Singapore Government.

In 1971, the airbase is officially handed over, and is under the administration of the then Department of Civil Aviation.

1977: On Oct 29, four armed Vietnamese hijack an Air Vietnam flight carrying 36 passengers from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore. The aircraft lands at Seletar Airport.

The hijackers eventually surrender to Singapore authorities, but not before two Vietnamese crew members are killed and a third person seriously injured.

2007: The Seletar Aerospace Park project is launched, with plans for Seletar Airport and its surrounding areas to be developed into a premier aerospace hub in the region.

Upgrading plans include a longer runway, a new control tower and fire station, with the number of parking stands doubled and additional taxiways.

2009: Changi Airport Group takes over management of the airport from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, previously known as the Department of Civil Aviation.

2011-2012: The extension of the Seletar Airport runway (above) by 250m to 1.84km is completed, as is the construction of a new fire station and new control tower on the east side of the runway. The old control tower was built before World War II.

2014-2015: Plans are announced last year to upgrade Seletar Airport as part of a bigger plan to increase the efficiency of Changi Airport.

The Straits Times reports on June 9 this year that the single-storey passenger terminal at Seletar Airport will be torn down and a new two-storey facility with better amenities will be ready by mid-2017.

Hong Kong artiste Rosamund Kwan Chi-lam has denied that she was getting married to her Taiwanese boyfriend of seven years in France this April, Sin Chew Daily reports.

The 52-year-old actress said she was happy with life and did not need a wedding certificate to prove it.

"Don't congratulate me as the speculation has been going on for years. It is not true," said Kwan, whose boyfriend is a businessman.

Sometimes, if you feel very constipated, it may actually help to reduce your fibre intake.
PHOTO: Sometimes, if you feel very constipated, it may actually help to reduce your fibre intake.
Not only is a lack of fibre not always the cause, many are observed to suffer more discomfort when placed on a high-fibre diet.
Fibre, also known as roughage, resists digestion by the human body, so taking excessive fibre is akin to clogging up a drain.
A common type of constipation arises from the slow or weak movements in the intestines. Fibre is resistant to digestion. If patients with slow intestinal transit are given fibre, it will only accumulate in the intestine and give rise to bloating. This is because fibre soaks up water and expands in the gut to make a person feel bloated. They create bulky stools, which, along with gas produced during the fermentation of fibre, leads to flatulence and cramping from the intestines being stretched.

HOW TO AVOID CONSTIPATIONPHOTO: Constipation is defined as having bowel movements fewer than three times per week. The stools are usually hard, dry, small in size and difficult to eliminate.

HOW TO AVOID CONSTIPATION
Tip #1. Set a regular time for bowel movements every day
The best time is usually after breakfast in the mornings, when the bowels are most active and are stimulated by the presence of food in the stomach.

Tip #2. Get sufficient sleep and wake up early.
Sleep, or the lack of it, may affect bowel functions, including how responsive the bowel is and the degree in which the muscles in the bowel contract.

Tip #3. Have a well-balanced diet that includes fibre.
Add wholegrain bread, cereals or other wholegrain products in your diet. Opt for high-fibre biscuits or granola bars as your snack choices.
The recommended daily amount of fibre, according to the Health Promotion Board, is 26g for men and 20g for women. This can be achieved by eating two servings each of fruit and vegetables and five to seven servings of wholegrain products.
Aim to have at least two servings of fruit and two servings of vegetables daily (these give a total of 10g to 12g of fibre).
Incorporate various types of cooked vegetables or salads in your main meals and add lentils or nuts in your stews or curries.
Besides taking fresh fruit, you may also drink pure juices such as prune juice or take dried fruit.
Prunes are especially high in fiber and contain sorbitol, a stool-loosening sugar that naturally helps relieve constipation.

Tip #4. If you need to go, go. Do not ignore the urge to defaecate
This is because a suppressed call can take many hours to return.
When someone ignores the urge to defecate, the pressure to empty bowels decreases in the rectum, which continues to store the stool.
Sometimes, the pelvic floor muscles may “forget” how to relax and may contract inappropriately even when one is ready to defecate. The exact cause is not known.

HOW TO AVOID CONSTIPATION
PHOTO: HOW TO AVOID CONSTIPATION
Tip #5. Drink plenty of fluids every day
This is as fluids help to disperse the fibre. A study finds that people who got plenty of fluids were the least likely to suffer constipation, Reuters reported.
Among the people who consumed the least amount of liquid daily from food and drinks, 8 percent of men and 13 percent of women were constipated, compared to 3 percent of men and 8 percent of women who got the most liquid.

Tip #6. If you usually do not suffer from constipation, then keep to your usual level of fibre and fluid intake.
Increasing your fibre intake when you are eating enough in the first place may worsen the constipation.
Research has shown that patients with constipation do not eat any less fibre than healthy people, so a lack of fibre is not always the cause of the problem.

Tip #7. Sometimes, if you feel very constipated, it may actually help to reduce your fibre intake.
Not only is a lack of fibre not always the cause, many are observed to suffer more discomfort when placed on a high-fibre diet.

HOW TO AVOID CONSTIPATION
PHOTO: HOW TO AVOID CONSTIPATION
Tip #8. Drink more fluids in the form of juices and milk.
Juices contain sorbitol which is a mild colonic stimulant that helps reduce the transit time of stool, while the lactose in milk may help to soften stool.

Tip #9. Be diligent in taking laxatives daily for up to two weeks in order to help restore regular bowel habits.
Know that it takes time to kickstart an engine that is not working well. Doctors and patients alike have the misconception that people can get too dependent on them to be weaned easily.
It is why patients are frequently prescribed short courses of laxatives and, sometimes, told to avoid using them daily.
On the contrary, some research shows a drug like prucalopride can have benefits even when used for up to 24 months.

1 in 3 S'poreans delay seeking help for constipation
PHOTO: 1 in 3 S'poreans delay seeking help for constipation

SINGAPORE - A recent survey has found that the majority of Singaporeans do not seek medical help for constipation, largely because they believe it will go away on its own.

The condition affects as many as one in four Singaporeans, but more than 35 per cent of patients wait three months or more before they see a doctor, the survey found.

Surprisingly, the reasons for not seeking medical treatment are neither cost nor embarrassment. The main reason for not seeing a doctor - 60 per cent of respondents - is the mistaken belief that constipation is either not a medical condition or that it will simply go away on its own.

According to Dr Reuben Wong, President of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Support Group and Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, National University Hospital, chronic constipation is considered a medical condition.

Constipation is considered chronic when symptoms persist for more than three months.

Common symptoms include straining, lumpy or hard stools, a sensation of incomplete evacuation, anorectal obstruction or blockage, and/or less than three defecations per week.
The study was jointly conducted by the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Support Group and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

KUALA LUMPUR - Instead of driving a wedge between one group and another, hardships should be the denominator that unites society and bridges all divides.

This is the life philosophy for author and motivational speaker Lizzie Velasquez, whose inspirational journey has led her to Malaysian shores to share her wisdom recently.

"I think one of the biggest things, in all of the places I have been to, is that in every place the people have one thing in common.

"We all have gone through some hardships at some point in our lives, and meeting so many different people and cultures and different ages; all of us connect in one way or another on the things we have gone through," the 26-year-old told the local press in conjunction with the National Achievers Congress 2015 here.

Velasquez was born with a rare condition that does not allow her body to accumulate fat. She has zero per cent body fat and has never weighed beyond 29kg.

She became the victim of cyberbullying in her younger days, after a YouTube video depicted her as "the worlds ugliest woman".

"Even though we come from different places, we all have the possibility or the chance to do whatever we set our mind to, but there is always a struggle.

"And at the end of the day, that struggle will make you an even better person than you can imagine," she said.

Velasquez also spoke about her documentary The Brave Heart, that debuted last March and how she had faced difficulties during her younger days.

"It's my face on the big screen, but it is about everyone else's story.

"I hope when people see it, they can relate to it, that there is a light at the end of tunnel. When I was younger, I didn't see that light," she said.

Being in a foreign land, thousands of kilometres away from her home in Austin, Texas, Velasquez said Malaysia had been a wonderful experience for her.

She promised to try some of the local dishes, although she admitted that she was a picky eater.

"But I told myself that I am trying to try new things while I am here," she laughed.

Velasquez is in town for four days since Friday and is accompanied by her parents, Rita Velasquez and Guadalupe Velasquez, and The Brave Heart director Sara Hirsh Bordo.

It was a week like no other week.

I spent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the wake of a friend who had died on Sunday. On Thursday morning, I went to his funeral.

On Friday night, I attended the wake of a former colleague's mother who had died earlier that week.

On Saturday morning, I went to the wake of an uncle who had passed on the day before.

It was perhaps little wonder that when Sunday came, I had a bad bout of the Sunday evening blues.

I've always felt out of sorts on Sunday nights. The world just seems gloomier, the air heavier and the night drearier than any other night of the week, only this time, it was worse. I felt suffocated.

Let's go for a walk and get dinner, He said.

No, I told him, I'm really not in the mood. I'm exhausted. I just want to curl up and sleep.

I'd known my friend since we were little. He was my oldest friend. We got along well and although we didn't meet that much, we wished the best for each other. His passing from brain cancer was not unexpected, but the timing came as a shock to me.

He had turned 53 the day before he died. A few of us had gathered at the nursing home he was in to have lunch and to cut his birthday cake. He couldn't eat. He was conscious but did not seem aware of us. It was a bittersweet visit and 12 hours later, he was gone.

My friend's mother had died unexpectedly after a short sickness and my uncle had been ill for three years.I'm at the age when wakes and funerals will become a common occurrence and I've got to brace myself for it.

My first brush with death was when my grandfather died of a heart attack when I was five.

He was a stout and handsome Teochew man who liked his food and liked to cook. He had a row of Ribena bottles in his room, filled with tasty, roasted, salted peanuts which he'd pour onto my palms.

We were living with him and he was fond of me. Every time my mother caned me, I'd go running to him and he'd scoop me up in his arms to protect me.

He slept on a green canvas bed supported by wooden poles. Whenever there was a thunderstorm, I'd go and sleep with him, back to back, our spines touching.

I didn't understand what his dying meant. I don't think I even cried. I just remember the commotion when he died and thinking how exciting it was that the whole clan was gathering.

Later, I was dressed in sackcloth like everyone else and we had to walk over a bridge and toss coins into a bucket during the wake.

When I was in my teens, a friend died in a road accident. That was the first time I realised what death meant.

It was bizarre how someone could be there one day, alive and full of quirks, and in the next second, be gone forever, and even more amazing was how he was my age.

When I became a journalist, I was on the crime beat for two years and had more encounters with death than most people would.

One of our duties was to visit the Singapore General Hospital mortuary every morning to see if there were unusual deaths we could report on.

The first time I was there, the body of a man was inside. Word was he had killed himself using a metal dog chain.

Another time, I had to interview the father of a boy who had committed suicide.

I still have a picture of the scene in my head - dusk was falling when the father came back from work. He had a weary look on his weather- beaten face. We stood outside his flat by the parapet.

"I forgive him," he said about his son.

The Hotel New World collapse in 1986 where 33 people died was the first large-scale tragedy I covered.

The scenes of despair as bodies were pulled out and the sweet, syrupy smell of death haunted me for a long time.

Over the years, there have been other deaths, of loved ones and acquaintances, and of strangers whose passing also affected me.

The death two years ago of the Singaporean man, his Korean girlfriend and her parents in an accident along the Central Expressway pained me for days.

As I age, I've become more and more aware that it won't be too long before I, too, will be gone.

Death is an ever-present fear for most people and in a Ted Talk, British author Stephen Cave describes it aptly: "We each live in the shadow of a personal apocalypse. And that's frightening. It's terrifying. And so we look for a way out."

Cave, who wrote a book called Immortality: The Quest To Live Forever And How It Drives Civilization, says that to cope with the terror of death, people from across cultures and over the ages have relied on four basic "immortality" stories.

The first is the elixir story, where we go in search of something that will make us live forever. It used to be the mythical fountain of youth. Today, we're talking stem-cell therapy and genetic engineering.

But we all know everyone will die and so there is a second concept we clutch at, says Cave - the resurrection story, where the idea is that while we will die, our bodies will rise and live again one day.

Others, however, believe in the soul story, which is the idea that we will leave our physical body behind, but we will live on as a soul.

Finally, there is the legacy story, which is the belief that you can live on through the echo you leave in the world, whether through your children or some form of legacy.

To say that the week that passed was sobering would be an understatement. It drew home to me how fragile life is and also just how plain horrible it is when someone you love dies.

What helped heal the pain were the rituals. The wakes and funerals allowed family and friends to come together to acknowledge the reality of the death, which was important. They also allowed us to remember the life of the person who died, to grieve and to support one another in that grief.

Death leaves a heartache that takes time to heal. Years can pass and you think you have moved on, but the pain can suddenly hit you again. I've been there.

At the funeral of my friend, one of his good friends gave a eulogy in which he recounted how a nun who was also a nurse asked a group of doctors and nurses this question: What is the opposite of death? Someone said it was life. But no, the nun said.

The opposite of death is birth, and what lies between is life.

My friend's death is mourned and we will miss him a lot. But he had lived a good and a full life, loved by many and there is some comfort in that.

A middle school teacher in Zhengzhou, Henan province caused a buzz on social media in April for her 10-character resignation letter, which read: "The world is so big, I want to explore it."

Since resigning so memorably, she has found love and settled down in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

The teacher, Gu Shaoqiang, met her husband Yu Fu, a native of Chengdu, Sichuan province, when she was volunteering at a coffee shop in Dali, during her spring festival holiday this year.

The pair soon found they were made for each other and quickly decided to get together within two months, after a temporary separation when they got back to their normal routines after the holiday.

Finally, we know what happened to Gu after she took a leap of faith and quit her job, and got married to Yu in Chengdu. This is the first time Gu has revealed details about her personal life to the public.

When asked about her new life in Chengdu, which hardly qualifies as "seeing the world", Gu said, "My husband is my world, anytime and anywhere."

For the first time ever, Rolls-Royce has created a car to honor the anniversary of a country.

The luxury car brand announced this week that it will be selling a SG50 Ghost Series II in connection with the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, which will be celebrated during Jubilee Weekend on August 7-10.

This SG50 Ghost Series II, a unique celebratory Rolls-Royce, will sit as a timeless masterpiece in a client’s care to reflect on this significant milestone,” Paul Harris, Asia Pacific regional director of Rolls-Royce, said in a press release.

A price for the limited edition Ghost has not been announced, but the Singapore dealer is already speaking with a few potential buyers, according to Rolls-Royce. The base price for a normal Ghost Series II is about $290,000.

The car boasts an all-white exterior that’s decorated with a red coachline to honor the Singapore flag, according to Rolls-Royce.

FOUR women were among the 16 people who helped a South Korean man trapped under a truck last Wednesday and recognised for their efforts.

They were given awards for their public spiritedness by the Singapore Civil Defence Force yesterday.

The 16 were among a group of passers-by who had helped Kim Seong Mo, 35, who had been pinned underneath a trailer truck after an accident in Boon Keng Road.

A 90sec video of the incident, which showed about 30 bystanders rushing to lift the truck to free him, went viral on social media.

Among the four women recognised yesterday were colleagues Diana Bregente and Er Sing Yee. The two sales managers had been on their way to lunch and were near the scene.

Ms Bregente, 36, told Shin Min Daily News that when they found out Mr Kim had been trapped, he was close to being rescued from under the truck by other passers-by. She quickly opened an umbrella to shade Mr Kim and a man who pulled him out, as it was very warm that day.

Ms Er, 32, called for an ambulance, checked how serious Mr Kim's injuries were and helped him to retrieve his mobile phone to contact his family.

Among those who helped to lift the truck was software engineer Asif Iqbal, 33, The Straits Times reported. The Singapore permanent resident from India was one of two men who ducked underneath the truck to pull Mr Kim out.

"We were all pushing the truck, then I realised, someone (had) to go underneath to pull him out," he said. "This was an incident where everyone stopped worrying about work stress and concerns, we put everything aside.

We just wanted to help the man."

PHOTO: On Wednesday, more than 30 people rushed to a man’s rescue after hearing his cries for help. He had been pinned under a truck at the corner of Bendemeer and Boon Keng Road that morning. The 35-year-old man was eventually freed after the passersby managed to lift the truck's wheels high enough. He was eventually sent to Tan Tock Seng hospital with a fractured leg, according to authorities.

The incident was recorded by Mr Foo Suan Wang who uploaded the video online, which quickly went viral. By Sunday morning, the video has been viewed more than 347,000 times and garnered 5,900 shares.

Commenters lauded the rescuers for stepping forward, calling them “Heroes!” and praising them for a job well done.

Mr Mohamed Zakaria, a senior technician who happened to be passing by, said there was a man in his 60s who led the efforts. However, he was not present at the ceremony on Sunday.

Mr Iqbal, a software engineer from India who was one of two men who pulled the victim to safety, said everyone spontaneously gathered to help.

"You could see people from different countries, but (all) the thoughts (were) of saving the man on the spot," Mr Iqbal said.

Those who helped said it took about 10 to 15 minutes to get the victim out.

Sixteen members of the public were recognised for their efforts on Sunday morning (Jul 26) by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) after helping to rescue a man trapped under a truck earlier in the week.

CHONGQING - A hug in exchange for 10 yuan (S$2). This is what a Chinese woman is offering to raise money for her daughter, who has leukaemia, said the Chinese media.

The 28-year-old woman, Chen Dejuan, was spotted outside a light rail station in south-west China's Chongqing city on Saturday, offering to hug anyone willing to give her 10 yuan to help with her daughter's medical fees, reported the city's official news website, Cqnews.

To prove she was not a swindler, Ms Chen showed her daughter's medical records, Cqnews added

Her four-year-old daughter, who was bald, sat at her side while she held up a placard on which was written, "Hug for sale - 10 yuan each", according to the website.

Some of the donors gave more than 10 yuan, and a number of them hugged her and her daughter, the website noted.

Ms Chen told Cqnews that she was initially squeamish about the thought of being hugged by strangers, and she ended up pacing around the station with her daughter for more than three hours on Friday, the first day of her money-raising effort.

"But seeing that my daughter was feeling uncomfortable and weak under the sun, I felt pain and knew I had no choice but to do it," she said.

"In fact, offering to be hugged by anyone requires lots of courage."

According to Ms Chen, she raised about 600 yuan in the first hour on Friday.

After her story made it to the Internet, many people transmitted money to her bank or online payment account.

Dismayed that some saw her act as a publicity stunt, she said she did think of selling desserts instead, but her daughter needed her constant care and the takings would not have been enough.

She revealed that she and her husband discovered their daughter's disease in May, while they were working in Shandong province.

They came back to Chongqing, her husband's native city, where they spent all the money they had borrowed at the Chongqing Medical University (CMU) on their child's treatment.

"My husband has gone back to his home county to sell off some of my dowry," she added.

She said she hit upon the "hugging" idea when some people she met in the hospital gave her monetary assistance, while others gave her hugs as encouragement.

A check with CMU showed that Ms Chen's daughter had been warded there for a period of time, said Cqnews.

The most common causes of kidney disease in Canada are diabetes and high blood pressure. You can do a lot to reduce your risk of kidney disease if you control your blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

Hemodialysis can be done at home. Although hemodialysis is usually done in a hospital or clinic, you may be able to have it done at home. You will need special training to do this.

          • Cleanse the blood, eg. remove urea & creatinine (dead muscle cells)
          • Removal of extra fluid (if not the following may result: puffy foot, cheeks and other parts of the body)
          • Keep the body chemicals and fluid in balance, eg. makes the electrolytes (ions) needed to isolate and dispose of toxic wastes in the body
          • Produce hormones, eg. Angiotensin to control blood pressure, Enythropoietin to create red blood cells, and synthesize vitamin D

          Diagnosis
          PHOTO: Diagnosis
Kidney disease can be so silent in the early stages that the patient may be perfectly well without any symptoms.

However, apart from a physical check up, patients usually need urine and blood tests to detect renal disease.

The urine is usually tested for:
          1. the presence of blood, a condition known as haematuria.
          2. the presence of protein or proteinuria
          3. cellular debris (also called casts)

The blood is tested also for abnormally high levels of substances that accumulate in the body in the presence of kidney failure. They include:
          1. the blood urea level
          2. the blood creatinine level
          3. other substances such as potassium and bicarbonate.

We don’t necessarily need two perfectly functioning kidneys. We have two kidneys that help to eliminate excess water and waste products from the body, but we only need one functioning or two partially functioning kidneys to stay healthy. That means that kidney disease has to be quite severe before the kidneys can’t do their job properly, and it means that someone with two healthy kidneys can donate one and still live a healthy life.

Your kidneys do a lot more than remove excess water, salt, and waste products from your body. They also help to regulate the levels of potassium, calcium, and phosphorus in your blood, remove medications from your body, produce a hormone that controls the production of red blood cells, and activate vitamin D.

In the early stages of kidney disease, there are no symptoms, and tests that measure kidney function may be normal. But as kidney disease progresses, the results of blood or urine tests may show abnormalities indicative of kidney disease. If blood or urine tests indicate that you may have kidney problems, you will likely undergo several other tests (e.g., ultrasound, CT scan, MRI scan, additional blood and urine tests) to determine the exact problem.

There is a lot you can do to prevent kidney disease. You can eat a healthy diet, be physically active, keep your blood pressure and blood sugar levels controlled, stop smoking, take medications as prescribed or recommended by your doctor, and have your kidney function monitored regularly.

Externally, the kidney is surrounded by the renal fascia, the perirenal fat capsule, and the renal capsule.

Internally, the kidney is most importantly filled with nephrons that filter blood and generate urine.

Kidney transplants are one of the most successful types of transplants. Living kidney transplants (from a live donor) have a success rate of 90% to 95% at one year and non-living transplants have a success rate of 85% to 90%.

Not all types of kidney disease are inherited. Many things can contribute to the development of kidney disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure, lupus, kidney stones, prostate problems, and medications.

PHOTO: What is Chronic Kidney Disease?
Chronic Kidney Disease includes conditions that damage the kidneys and decrease their ability to keep us healthy. It may be caused by diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and other disorders.
An individual is at risk of Chronic Kidney Disease when his or her GFR (a measure of the kidney's function) is less than 60ml/min/1.73m² for a period of more than 3 months.

The best source of a kidney donation is from a close relative (e.g., parent, sibling). Living-donor transplants have the highest success rate and are more likely to be a close match to your genetic make-up, which will decrease the risk of rejection. Living donations, however, should be completely voluntary. No one should be pressured to donate.

There is a huge demand for healthy kidneys for transplants. Consider what you can do to help. Register for organ or tissue donation

Wanbao reported that the woman escaped from the bedroom window because the fire was blocking access to the front door.

A fight over a seat on a Wuhan train in China on Aug 2 turned more than just ugly when a middle-aged woman nearly stripped her young opponent topless.

The 1.43min long video started with the woman pulling the hair of a teenage girl, Chinese news site, People.com.cn reported.

As the older woman continued to yank the teen's hair, the senior shouted that she was educating the latter, despite pleas from other commuters to stop.

A man intervened by trying to release the older woman's grip from the girl's hair.

Throughout the scuffle, the petite teen refused to budge and stayed on her seat while the older woman tried to shove her off.

As the hair-pulling escalated, the woman started to yank the teen's pink top, nearly stripping her in the process.

Ms Su, whose friend uploaded the video online, explained to People.com.cn that the fight started when both women were fighting to grab a seat at the corner of the train, resulting in the altercation (argument).

We kind of expected this, didn't we?

UPDATE at 1:30am: The lady in question has reached out to Mothership.sg. She tells us she was flattered by the sudden interest in her, but wishes to maintain her privacy, and we shall respect her decision.

Just who was the star of the SG50 National Day Parade?

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong? Wrong.

          It’s this girl:

She appeared multiple times on TV during the live broadcast of the Parade on Sunday evening, and we’re certainly not surprised by the fact that the cameraman in her area knew exactly who where to focus on.

Investigations are ongoing to determine her identity — which we know you of course want to know.

Naturally, social media went cray over this mysterious woman and her inherent beauty. While some insist that she may have been a pretty face intentionally planted in the crowd (and perfectly positioned in the centre of live camera lens), Kaki News Network claims to have identified her. Apparently, she managed to have her picture taken with none other than Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong himself two years ago.

After netizens went crazy over the pretty faces shown on TV, the internet's CSI warriors have done it again. The lady who melted the hearts of so many male Singaporeans has been found! Her name is Emma Li and she is from China.

On Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, Emma Li shared that her birthday falls on Singapore's national day and revealed that even though she could earn a living using her "pretty face", she still insisted on working hard.

Lads (and gals, we don't discriminate), here's your chance to throw your best National Day-related pickup lines.

We've got a slightly wet and drizzly morning ahead of us, but it's cloudy weather the rest of the day, according to NEA's forecast. Here's hoping for a rain-free parade - the last time the heavens opened during an NDP, if you recall, was in 2008.

Mr Steven Lee, the man behind historic broadcast of Proclamation of Independence
While he was part of a historical moment, the radio announcer who read Singapore's Proclamation of Independence in 1965 had his mind on another crisis at home that happened a few days before.

Mr Steven Lee's first child, born on Aug 3, had heart palpitations and had to be warded in hospital longer than usual for observation.

By 09 August 1965, his son was back at home but, that morning, Mr Lee was asked to rush to the radio station.

He answered the call of duty despite being on leave, not realising then the significance of what he had to read that day. At 10am, in his rich and deep voice, he read the proclamation over then Radio Singapore. This document, signed by founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, declared that Singapore "shall forever be a sovereign democratic and independent nation".

Mr Steven Lee's wife Amy, 75, told The Straits Times yesterday she realised what had happened only when he came home that day and said: "We are no longer with Malaysia." . . . . . . .

Mr Lee died in 2002, aged 64, from complications from a second heart transplant. He is known for being the first newsreader to appear on television here in 1963, often wearing his black-rimmed glasses. He had a long career of almost 40 years in the radio and TV business, working at Rediffusion radio station, Radio Singapore and Singapore Broadcasting Corporation.

A girl enjoying the National Day Parade at the Padang on Sunday. She was among some 1.7 million people who participated in the jubilee celebrations over the past four days, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat yesterday. A factor that contributed to the "huge turnout" was the extra public holiday on Friday, he added.
